Jeff S. Mayes

Shareholder   |   Houston

Jeff is a Board Certified labor and employment law specialist who represents management in matters involving all areas affecting the employment relationship. Jeff has successfully handled cases relating to race, sex, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation and disability discrimination, harassment and retaliation in state and federal courts across the country, as well litigation involving employee leave, wage and hour, non-competition and trade secret, and employment-related torts. Jeff represents employers in courts across the country, as well as before governmental agencies such as the EEOC, Department of Labor, OSHA and the National Labor Relations Board. He has tried several cases to verdict, as well as successfully defended employers in binding arbitration, had claims against them involuntarily dismissed before trial, or achieved favorable resolution through mediation.

While Jeff’s practice focuses on employment litigation, he also regularly counsels and advises employers on day-to-day activities and decisions with an intent to avoid litigation. Jeff guides employers through employee leave and disability issues, wage and hour compliance, discipline and termination decisions, hiring and selection procedures and practices, handbooks and policies, and union avoidance. Jeff also provides training to clients and industry groups on labor and employment matters to educate them in complying with the myriad employment laws and stay out of the courtroom.

Through decades of experience representing employers of all sizes – from the Fortune 200 to the corner store – Jeff has developed a no-nonsense approach to resolving employment issues and delivering practical advice. Jeff knows that clients want answers they can use, not inconclusive legal theories, which makes him a trusted, valued and favored ally to Ogletree Deakins clients who appreciate practical and useful solutions to their employment issues.
